Winter Mittens |
We read and giggled along with the book "A Hat For Minerva Louise" and then first grade artists designed their own mittens. They first started with oil pastels and traced mitten shapes around their own hands (helping each other trace their dominant hands!) and then divided their space up with horizontal lines. They chose line and shape patterns to add and then painted them in with (my favorite) liquid watercolors. The next day they learned about weaving and wove two sleeves, cut out their mittens, and put all of the pieces together. It was perfect timing with Ann Arbor's first big winter storm of the season!

Watercolor Shape Birds
|
1st grade students learned a few ways to draw a bird while we talked about the different parts of a bird. The students added a horizon line (where the sky meets the ground), thought about whether it was day or night time in their scene, and added additional details. They include crayon rubbings with texture plastic pieces for the textured grass and painted in the rest with liquid watercolors.
